We encourage you to review the ISSS website where you will find lots of useful information. Visit this page (Students/Newly Admitted International Students) for the latest information on International Student Orientation. If you are new to the U.S. and Miami, check out our informative web sessions, Adjusting to Life in America and Starting your Life in Miami. Be sure to click slideshow and turn your audio on. To take a fun and informative virtual campus tour, go to Information on off-campus housing options, health insurance, immunization, financial matters, getting to campus, and what to do after you arrive to the U.S. are also available here. Under the About ISSS tab, become acquainted with the Council of International Students and Organizations (COISO) and check out the International Student Welcome Guide, prepared by and for international students.

Along with your Form I-20, you received Important Information Regarding Your UM Form I-20, such as applying for an F-1 student visa, and entering the U.S. Please read this information carefully. Due to greater scrutiny for visa applicants at U.S. consular offices, you should begin the visa application process as soon as possible.

We ask that you complete the mandatory online Immigration Session prior to your arrival in order to familiarize yourself with the regulations that govern your immigration status. This tutorial will provide you with information on how to maintain your F-1 status at UM, apply for F-1 benefits, and request services provided by ISSS. To access the Online Immigration Session, log on to Blackboard with your CaneID and click “International Student & Scholar Services” under the “My Organizations” menu.  To successfully complete the Online Immigration Session, you must correctly answer all of the questions at the end of the module.

After you have arrived at UM, ISSS must confirm to the U.S. government that you have reported to school and enrolled in your program of study by "registering" your record in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). In order for ISSS to register your record in SEVIS, complete the required SEVIS Registration for Students in F-1 and J-1 Status, accessible via the ISSS website. Please click on the "Students" tab and select "Important Links for International Students". Please do not submit the form prior to your arrival in Miami.

We hope this information is helpful to you. Please do not hesitate to contact ISSS ( if you have any questions before or after your arrival.

Have a safe trip, and see you in January!
