Health Insurance and Immunization

All international students are required to enroll in the University-sponsored health insurance program regardless of credit load. The annual premium for this coverage is added to each student's fees.

Exceptions:

  • International students who are residing outside of the United States are not eligible for the Student Health Insurance Plan. Please email studenthealth@miami.edu for further assistance with removing the health insurance charge.
  • International students sponsored by their embassy must waive the Student Health Insurance Plan because coverage is provided by the sponsoring embassy. Please follow the waiver instructions available on the information page for domestic students.

Optional coverage for dependents can be requested at the time the student is first able to enroll in the plan (within 14 days of the  start of the semester) or due to a qualifying life event.  Renewal of dependent coverage is the responsibility of the student.    Enrollment and payment are directly through Aetna Student Health.   Students in J-1 status are required to purchase insurance for their dependents. Failure to do so is a violation of your nonimmigrant status.

For more information, contact the Student Health Service at www.miami.edu/student-health or 305-284-5921.

Other Health Suggestions

It is recommended that you have any necessary dental work completed prior to coming to the U.S., as this tends to be expensive in the United States. It is also recommended that you bring with you an extra pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses and your prescription. If you take regular medications, it is advised that you bring a large enough supply, if possible, to cover your intended stay in the United States. Sometimes these medications are not available and therefore this may affect your health status.
