Authorization for Occasional Lectures and Short-Term Consultations

Under certain circumstances, J-1 exchange visitors/scholars may be eligible to engage in occasional lectures or short-term consultations for a U.S. employer other than their host department, and to receive compensation for these activities. If you are not participating in the University of Miami's Exchange Visitor Program but are sponsored by another exchange visitor program sponsor and receive an invitation from a U.S. employer other than your UM host department to engage in occasional lectures or short-term consultations, contact your exchange visitor program sponsor to request authorization to engage in occasional lectures or short-term consultations. Only your exchange visitor program sponsor can provide you with this authorization.

If you are participating in UM's Exchange Visitor Program and receive an invitation from a U.S. employer other than your UM host department to engage in occasional lectures or short-term consultations, submit the electronic Occasional Lectures or Short-term Consultations Authorization Request for Exchangte Visitors in J-1 Status to electronic workflow at least two weeks before you wish to engage in the occasional lecture or short-term consultation.  The electronic request form requires you to upload the following documents:
  • A letter from the offeror setting forth the terms and conditions of the offer to lecture or consult, including the duration, number of hours, field or subject, amount of compensation, and description of such activity; and
  • A letter from your department head or supervisor at UM recommending such activity and explaining how it would enhance your exchange visitor program at UM, and stating that engaging in the activity would not delay the end of your exchange visitor program at UM.

Upon receipt, International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) will review your request. Provided that the proposed occasional lecture or short-term consultation and the letters meet the criteria listed above, ISSS will provide you with written authorization to engage in the occasional lecture or consultation for a U.S. employer other than your department, and you will need to provide the authorization to the offeror.
