Who should not attend ISO?

1) Full-time and part time Intensive English Program (IEP) students should contact IEP (iep@miami.edu) for information on IEP orientation.

2) Study Abroad/exchange students should attend the Study Abroad Office’s orientation. For dates, time, and location, contact the Study Abroad Office at studyabroad@miami.edu or visit their website at studyabroad.miami.edu

3) Parents who plan to accompany their undergraduate student to the U.S. should attend the Family Orientation Program. For Family Orientation check-in dates, time, and location, contact the Department of Orientation at orientation@miami.edu or visit their website at orientation.studentaffairs.miami.edu.

We encourage you to review the ISSS website where you will find lots of useful information. Visit this page (Students/Newly Admitted International Students) for the latest information on International Student Orientation. If you are new to the U.S. and Miami, check out our informative web sessions, Adjusting to Life in America and Starting your Life in Miami. Be sure to click slideshow and turn your audio on. To take a fun and informative virtual campus tour, go to www.youvisit.com/miami. Information on undergraduate student housing, meal plans, health insurance, immunization, financial matters, getting to campus, and what to do after you arrive to the U.S. are also available here. Under the About ISSS tab, become acquainted with the Council of International Students and Organizations (COISO) and check out the International Student Welcome Guide, prepared by and for international students.

Along with your Form I-20, you will receive useful information regarding your Form I-20, applying for an F-1 student visa, and entering the U.S. Due to greater scrutiny for visa applicants at U.S. consular offices, you should begin the visa application process as soon as possible.

We ask that you complete the mandatory online Immigration Session prior to your arrival in order to familiarize yourself with the regulations that govern your immigration status. This tutorial will provide you with information on how to maintain your F-1 status at UM, apply for F-1 benefits, and request services provided by ISSS. To begin the session, go to www.miami.edu/immigrationsession

After you have arrived at UM, ISSS must confirm to the U.S. government that you have reported to school and enrolled in your program of study by "registering" your record in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). In order for ISSS to register your record in SEVIS, complete the I am Here! International Student Arrival to UM & Enrollment Confirmation, accessible via the ISSS website homepage beginning December. Please do not submit the form prior to your arrival in Miami.

We hope this information is helpful to you. Please do not hesitate to contact ISSS (isss@miami.edu) if you have any questions before or after your arrival.

Have a safe trip, and see you in January!
